Creative Audio Description
Apostolos Anagnostaras’ work “The aulometallophone and the musical canes” consists of three sound sculptures: a metal flute and two musical canes. All three sculptures stand on stone bases placed on the floor. The flute is formed by six scaffolding pipes, arranged vertically according to size. When air is blown through their openings an ethereal, almost otherworldly music emerges. The musical canes, inspired by the white cane used by blind persons, are made of metal rods ending in semicircular pipes with bells. As they are moved across the floor, visitors can discover the space through the sounds produced by the contact between the pipes, the bells and the ground.
The resulting sound maps the space, turning movement into an experience of listening and exploration. As the viewer wanders and activates the sculptures, the sound of the metal narrates the coexistence of human and matter. The pipes and bells, materials of wear and reuse, are transformed, evoking—through vibration and motion—the memory of the space and the bodies that inhabit it.
