Maria Beka, Co-nnect, 2024, installation, wooden frame, telephone receiver, white cotton string, small bells, cupcake, 45 x 43 x 12 cm

Creative Audio Description

Maria Beka’s work “Co-nnect” is a small scale sculpture, roughly the size of an outdoor tile, presenting a novel interpretation of a telephone booth. The piece features a wooden footrest mounted on the wall, with a telephone receiver hanging to its left, tied with a white cotton string. The footrest bears small stones that resemble the buttons on a telephone dial. On one side of the receiver are brown bells, while on the other,  a chocolate cupcake.

Communication is presented as a multisensory experience that transcends the boundaries of speech and sight. Sound, touch, and smell are among the senses that dominate the piece. Human presence is felt sometimes intensely and sometimes subtly, depending on the visitor’s interaction with the work, echoing everyday encounters that linger on memory with varying depth, along the path of both personal and collective journey.
