Multisensoriality: Innovative practices by art museums for audiences with or without visual impairments
The discussion on accessibility in museums has shifted museology’s focus toward experiential approaches in museum exhibitions.
This presentation introduces and analyses this transition from tactile and auditory tours for visitors with visual impairments to the design of innovative activities for all audiences, through the combined use of multi-sensory stimuli.
Bio
Esther Solomon is Associate Professor of Museum Studies at the University of Ioannina. She studied archaeology, museology and social anthropology at the University of Ioannina, the Universita Internazionale dell’Arte in Florence, the University of Sheffield and the University College London.
She worked as museologist, museum educator and exhibition curator for the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Specialised in ethnographic approaches to material culture, she has published widely on museum and exhibition theory, museum communication, public history and “difficult” heritage.
