Varvara Thoma, Synecdoche, 2024, mixed media, tracing paper, thread, marker, 3 x (20 x 20 cm)

Creative Audio Description

Varvara Thoma’s work “Synecdoche” is a mixed-media piece consisting of three sheets of tracing paper. Upon them appear words written in ink, interconnected through lines formed by the seams of a sewing machine, at times bold, at times wavy, at other times flowing.

The first sheet represents life in the city, with stitches forming an organized grid of rectangles (a kanavos) that evokes the noise and speed of urban life. The second depicts the neighborhood, with angular seams that reveal interconnections and relationships. On the final sheet, curved stitches trace life around the lake, flowing softly across the surface.

The work explores notions of place and space within a broader context, where the city, the natural and constructed environments, as well as the human being, compose landscapes and spaces, experiences and relationships. The visitor, like the artist herself, explores them through the seams and paths of the thread that weave the connection between the self, the body, and knowledge with space.
